Cinnamon Bark: My Approach to This Potent Oil
I spent over 20 years managing eczema, allergies, and inflammation. Those years taught me that quick fixes don't last. Lasting wellbeing comes from daily foundations. One thing I've learned while supporting thousands of people across the globe is that respecting the potency of an oil is just as important as using it. Cinnamon Bark is a staple, but it must be handled with care.
What is Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil?
It is distilled from the bark of the Cinnamomum zeylanicum tree. It is rich in cinnamaldehyde, which makes it a 'hot' oil. That is why I always emphasize caution. It has a powerful, spicy aroma that is quite different from the milder cinnamon leaf.
How I Use It
I focus on consistency rather than intensity. Here is how I incorporate it into my life:
- Atmospheric Ambience: I diffuse it to create a warm, inviting space. It is perfect for those days when I am working between my home bases in India, Vietnam, or the USA.
- Surface Freshening: I add a tiny amount to my home cleaning solutions. It leaves a wonderful, spicy scent.
- Oral Care: I sometimes add a very small amount to my oral care routine for a fresh scent.
The 'Hot Oil' Dilution Rules
As a Foundational Well-being Coach, I tell the people I work with that results come from action and consistency, not intention. Safety is the foundation of that consistency. Because Cinnamon Bark is a 'hot' oil, it can cause skin irritation. Never skip dilution.
Topical Application Dilution:
- Use a maximum dilution of 0.5% (or 0.1-0.2% for sensitive skin). This means 1 drop of Cinnamon Bark oil per 10-20ml of a carrier oil like dōTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil.
- Always perform a patch test first.
- Avoid eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.
- Never apply it undiluted.
Internal Use:
I suggest extreme caution here. If you choose to use it internally:
- Dilute 1 drop in at least 120ml of liquid or a veggie capsule.
- Use it sparingly.
Special Considerations:
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to a professional first.
- It is not for use on children.
- It is not considered photosensitive.
My Favorite Diffusion Blends
A little goes a long way. I use fewer drops of this than I do for my morning Lemon water ritual.
- Simple Diffusion: 1-2 drops in your dōTERRA diffuser.
- Uplifting Blend: 1 drop Cinnamon Bark, 2 drops Wild Orange, 2 drops Clove.
- Cozy Home Blend: 1 drop Cinnamon Bark, 2 drops Cedarwood, 2 drops Frankincense.
Culinary Tips
I love using this to flavor food. Always use food-grade oils.
- Flavor Enhancement: Use a toothpick swirl for oatmeal or smoothies.
- Baking: Replace ground cinnamon with a toothpick swirl.
- Hot Beverages: Add a toothpick swirl to tea.
Start small. Use a toothpick swirl and taste before you add more.
